Buying Guide

  1. The Ultimate Tree Care Equipment Guide

    The tree care industry is an important part of our world. Arborists and other tree care professionals dedicate their lives to keeping people and homes safe, planting trees, and caring for trees to allow them to thrive and preserve nature for the next generation. But that doesn’t mean that tree care is a “walk in the park”. It’s a dangerous job and the equipment that tree care professionals use can be the difference between a job well done and a terrible or even fatal accident. This week our Gear Experts® are going to outline the must-have equipment for every tree care professional.

    Harness

    Spending all day climbing trees is by no means easy. Having a comfortable harness can help make the job a little bit easier, though. A harness is one of the most important gear choices you will make. Not only will you be wearing it for most of the day, but it is where all of your other gear comes together to keep you safe and productive on the job. Some things to look for when choosing your tree care harness include padding, back support, D-rings and connection loops, and shoulder straps.

    Padding can truly be the difference between comfort and misery. Having padding strategically placed in areas like leg supports and shoulder straps can have a huge impact on productivity. Back supports can come in handy, too. Working at-height isn’t exactly gentle on the back. A high-quality back support helps you push through to get the job done. Depending on what type of work you will be doing, how much gear you need to take with you, and whether you need additional support, additional D-rings, connection points, and shoulder straps are all things to consider.

    Pulleys

    Pulleys can be useful for a variety of tree care projects. The type of pulley and the capabilities that it has will depend on what you are trying to accomplish. However, some things to look for when picking a pulley will include the weight, max rope size, sheave, and if it is a single or double pulley.

    When you are spending all day climbing trees, the last thing you want to have to deal with is a bunch of heavy equipment weighing you down and tiring you out. If you don’t need a huge pulley that is made of a heavy material saving the weight will be well worth it in the long run. Now imagine getting to the job site, getting everything set up, and realizing that the pulley you need to complete the job doesn’t work with the rope you brought. That is why it is important to consider max rope size when selecting a pulley.

    The sheave is the grooved wheel that is mounted inside the pulley that holds the rope in place. A sheave spins on an axle or bearing inside the frame of the pulley. The reason why it is important to pay attention to the sheave is that they come in a number of different shapes which are designed for different styles of ropes and wires. Whether or not the pulley is a single or double just depends on what you will be using the pulley for.

    Rope, Rope Devices, and Hitch Cords

    Pulleys and a harness aren’t very effective without rope. Not only does rope protect you from hitting the ground in the event of a fall, but it can also serve a range of other purposes. Those purposes can be amplified with rope devices and accessories. Things like ascenders, fall arresters, throw bags, rigging plates, swivels, and a whole slew of different devices can help you achieve your rope’s full potential.

    Saws

    A saw (whether handheld or mechanical) is pretty much required when it comes to tree care because cutting down or trimming a tree with your bare hands isn’t easy (trust us… we tried). The type of saw that will be best for the job will depend on what you are doing. For example, if you are pruning trees, a hand saw might be more effective. On the flipside, if you are cutting at the base of the tree, a chainsaw will be more effective.

  2. Product Spotlight: Tuf-Tug Cable Climb Systems

    Cable climb systems, also known as a ladder fall protection system, can streamline tower maintenance projects and provide additional job site safety. The basic function of a cable climb system is to have a ladder with a cable attached to it, pre-installed on a tower. You use a cable grab, attached to your sternal D-ring, to easily move up and down the ladder. In the event of a fall, the cable safety sleeve locks onto the cable and arrests the fall. Applications for cable climb systems include towers, billboards, commercial buildings, utility structures, solar, and wind. This week our Gear Experts® are going to break down Tuf-Tug cable climb systems.

    Approved

    As legacy cable climb systems on towers begin to reach the end of their useful life, and as structures that are updated are required to have cable climb systems installed, it can start to be difficult to know which systems are approved to be used on specific sites. Tuf-Tug Cable Climb Systems are approved for installation on major tower sites by their owners. This makes deciding which system to get a whole lot easier.

    What Systems?

    Tuf-Tug makes cable climb systems for all standard towers in most standard lengths. On top of that, they also feature all of the needed equipment for the system included with the system itself – say goodbye to having to buy extra parts!

    Tuf-Tug manufactures 3 systems. They are a monopole system, a fixed ladder system, and a round climbing leg system.

    What’s Included?

    All systems include A stainless steel (factory swaged) cable that is cut to the chosen length. The stainless steel finish provides additional protection against harsh weather conditions which extends the life of the system.

    Monopole

    The monopole system includes:

    • A cable head assembly with fasteners and impact attenuator;
    • Monopole cable guides;
    • A monopole base anchor bracket with a tension adjustment anchor bolt;
    • Cable clips; and
    • Cable fasteners.

    This system is available in 100’, 150’, 200’, and 250’ lengths.

    Fixed Ladder

    The fixed ladder system includes:

    • A heavy-duty upright mount bracket for solid rung ladders;
    • Ladder mount cable guides;
    • A head assembly with an impact attenuator;
    • Base anchor bracket assembly with tension adjustment;
    • Eye bolts; and
    • Cable clips;

    This system is available in 100’, 200’, 250’, 300’, and 400’ lengths.

    Round Climbing Leg

    The round climbing leg system includes:

    • A universal round leg head adapter bracket (which fits legs between 1.5 and 5 inches in diameter);
    • A round leg universal channel clamp (for up to 8 inches in diameter);
    • A head assembly with an impact attenuator;
    • Stud mount cable guides with fasteners;
    • A base anchor angle attachment bracket with tension adjustment eyebolt;
    • Thimble; and
    • Cable clamps.

    This system is available in 150’, 200’, 250’, and 300’ lengths.

    Further Customization

    If you need additional components or even a non-standard length, these cable climb systems can be completely customized to fit your requirements. For more information on customization, or for any other questions, click here to contact one of our Gear Experts®.

  3. First Aid 101

    While we all would like to live in a world where accidents don’t happen. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Being prepared for accidents can make all the difference in emergency situations. One important aspect of that preparedness is having a first aid kit on site and fully stocked. This week our Gear Experts® are going to break down ANSI requirements for first aid kits.

    ANSI Z308.1

    The ANSI Z308.1 standard sets the standard for minimum requirements for first aid kits and their contents. Each kit is classified by the assortment and quantity of first aid supplies to treat injuries and illnesses common to workplaces, such as major and minor wounds, minor burns, sprains and strains, and eye injuries. There are two kit classes and 4 classifications depending on the contents and size of the kit.

    ANSI Kit Classes

    The kit classes for an ANSI approved first aid kits are broken down into two classes: Class A and Class B.

    Class A

    Class A kits are designed to deal with the most common types of workplace injuries like minor cuts and scrapes, sprains, etc.

    Class B

    Class B kits, on the other hand, are designed with a more varied type and quantity of supplies. They are intended to deal with injuries in more complex or high-risk environments.

    Kit Classifications

    Kit classifications further break down kits based on portability, mounting options, resistance to water, and corrosion and impact resistance. These classes are expressed as Type 1, 2, 3, or 4.

    Type 1

    Type 1 kits are intended for use in stationary, indoor applications. They are not portable and should have means to be mounted in a fixed position.

    Type 2

    Type 2 kits are intended for portable, indoor applications. These should be equipped with a carrying handle.

    Type 3

    Type 3 kits are intended for portable use in mobile indoor and outdoor settings. They should have the ability to be mounted and contain a water-resistant seal.

    Type 4

    Type 4 kits are intended for portable use in mobile industries or outdoor applications where the potential for damage due to environmental factors and rough handling is present.

    Supplies

    The standard also specifies the minimum amount of supplies to be included with each kit as well as the minimum size or volume of the kit itself. Lastly, the standard specifies that the kits contain first aid supplies in uniform-sized color-coded boxes. Below we feature a chart that outlines these requirements.

    We'd also like to note that unfortunately, some materials in first aid kits do have expirations dates. So, it's important to routinely check your kits for expired materials and replace them as needed. We also recommend that you refill items that have been more than 60% depleted. This will help ensure that you always have the supplies you need when you need them.

    Build vs. Buy

    Now you’re probably wondering whether it is better to build your own kit or buy your kit. The answer is both. Building your own kit may be something that you want or feel you need to do. Not every job site is the same, so you may want a custom kit that has supplies in addition to the ones that come in standard kits. The important thing to remember is that you include everything required by the ANSI Z308.1 standard.

    If you don’t want to build your own kit, we’ve got a full selection of pre-built ANSI complaint kits. They come in every shape, size, and classification so you can be in compliance no matter what the job site situation is. You can still add further customization to these kits by adding additional job site specific items. The kit includes everything that is required with extra space for everything that you need.

  4. Gas Detection 101

    Gasses aren’t always at the top of mind when a project is being discussed or planned, but that doesn’t make them any less dangerous. When it comes to gas, the best way to be prepared is to know what you’re up against. This week our Gear Experts® are going to break down gas detection and how you can accurately keep your crew safe no matter what gas is flying around the job site.

    Gas

    Let’s start with the basics. We are constantly inhaling and exhaling gas – the oxygen we breathe in, the carbon dioxide we breathe out, and all the other gasses that are around us every day. Not all gas is hazardous and not all hazardous gas is toxic unless enough is breathed in. Every job is different and that means the air around the structure and the gasses created by the environment and machines are different, too. Hazardous gas can be created by a long list of different things – from natural occurrences to man-made devices.

    Knowing that a hazardous gas is present is an essential part of job site safety. Some hazardous gasses smell – which means our noses can tell us when we are exposed to them. However, not every hazardous gas can be detected by human senses – at least, not until it is too late. On top of that, mixtures of otherwise harmless gasses can cause a whole slew of dangers like suffocation, explosions, and/or fires.

    Gas Detection

    We’ve already mentioned that there are some gasses that we can smell easily and some gasses that we cannot smell at all. So how do we know if we are being exposed to a hazardous gas? Or how do we know if there are two gasses present that can cause other issues (like an explosion)? That can be done with a gas monitor. A gas monitor, also referred to as a gas detector, is a device that detects the presence of gas in an area.

    The actual function of a gas detector is pretty simple. The device has sensors in it that are programmed to detect the presence of specific gasses. If that type of gas is detected, the gas detector will alert the user via an alarm. The most common sensors used in at-height, industry, and construction are Combustible (LEL), Oxygen, and Toxic.

    Combustible (LEL): Combustible (LEL), or combustible lower exposure level sensors, are designed to detect and monitor combustible hydrocarbon gases in the air. The most common combustible gasses are:

    • Methane
    • Butane
    • High Hydrogen Content (HHC)
    • Nonane
    • Propane
    • Hydrogen

    Oxygen: Oxygen sensors are essential for situations where having accurate oxygen measurements could prevent injury or death. Not all areas have safe oxygen levels, especially when in confined spaces.

    Toxic: Toxic sensors are pretty self-explanatory, but they measure the levels of toxic gasses. The most common toxic gasses are:

    • Carbon Monoxide (CO)
    • Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)
    • Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
    • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

    How the Sensors Work

    The way the sensors work varies depending on the type of sensor the manufacturer used. The most common types of sensors are:

    • Electrochemical Sensors – Most commonly used for toxic gas detection. These sensors use electrodes to send signals when gas is detected.
    • MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductors) – Most commonly used for toxic gasses – carbon monoxide in particular. Metal oxide semiconductors use a gas sensitive film that triggers when the levels of gas become toxic.
    • Catalytic Sensors – Most modern gas monitors use catalytic sensors. Catalytic sensors have a platinum treated wire coil that heats up when exposed to gasses due to oxidation. When the resistance of the wire is changed, due to the heat generated by oxidation, a circuit detects this change and triggers the warning.
    • IR (Infrared Sensors) – This type of sensor uses a series of transmitters and receivers. The transmitters emit a light. If the receiver cannot “see” the light because of gas being in the way it triggers the warning.

  6. Fall Protection Rescue Kit Buying Guide

    It’s no secret that climbing towers for a living is a dangerous job. While we would all like to believe that accidents don’t happen, we know they do. Being prepared for emergency situations is not only important but also required by law. Finding and sourcing all the equipment needed for your rescue “kit” can take up too much of your time. Here at GME Supply, we know your time is valuable. That’s why we carry a full selection of pre-assembled rescue kits. In this blog post, our Gear Experts® are going to go over what things you need to look for in a rescue kit.

    Rescue Kits

    Rescue kits are fantastic because they include everything you need to perform a rescue. One important thing to point out is that not every rescue kit is going to be right for every rescue. Beyond that, there may be special circumstances that require additional equipment or highly specialized kits. We will cover that in more detail later. For now, let’s focus on standard rescue kits.

    What’s Included

    Most rescue kits are going to come with a standard set of equipment. However, it is important that you check and make sure the kit has the equipment you need and that it meets your specifications. The standard items that will come in nearly every kit are a rope, a rope bag, a descender, carabiners, a pick-off strap (or haul system), and a sling.

    What to Look For

    What you need in your kit will be dependent on the situations you encounter the most. No two rescues are the same and that makes a kit that can cover every situation impossible to build. But, with a little help from our Gear Experts® we can have you in compliance and ready to go with a safety plan.

    When looking for rescue kits there are many things to consider. Let’s break down some of the key points that you need to consider before you purchase.

    Rope: When looking at the rope (lifeline) that the kit comes with some key things to look at are rope diameter, length, and color. For more about how to find the perfect rope, click here to check out our blog post all about rope.

    Rope Bag: Your rope bag helps you transport and protect your rope. Some things to consider about the rope bag are material, weather resistance, size, and color. We've got a blog post that covers rope bags, too. Click here to check it out!

    Descender: A descender is a convenient and intricate part of any rescue system. Some things to look for are features like anti-panic, rope compatibility, weight, and certifications.

    Carabiners: Carabiners are a versatile tool and have a range of functions. Things to look for in your rescue kit carabiners are gate style, size, certifications, and load ratings.

    Pick-Off Strap: Pick-off straps help you transfer a load during rescue situations. The most important things to consider for a pick-off strap is adjustable length and MBS.

    Haul System: A haul system can help prevent difficulties when performing a rescue. And when someone’s life is on the line ease of use can make all the difference. Some things to consider when looking at a haul system include ease of use, mechanical advantage, and details about the equipment utilized in the system.

    Specialty and Custom Rescue Kits

    Sometimes the jobs you perform are uncommon and require a specialty kit. We feature a selection of different rescue kits that are specialized for certain situations like self-rescues, wind rescue, and crane tech rescues.  If you have a specific type of kit that you need built – we’ve got you covered there too.

    Our state of the art account management system allows us to create custom kits, built specifically to suit your needs. The benefit of this type of system is that next time you call in; you have the same pricing and the same products every time. You don’t have to go through countless emails and talk to 5 different people to make sure that you are getting the exact same kit you got last time because we do that for you.

    Would you like to build your custom kit, looking to get some advice on which kit is best for your situation, or simply have questions? Click here to contact one of our Gear Experts®.

  8. Cold Stress 101

    It seems like just yesterday we were focusing on heat and how to work in it. But, with winter in full swing, it’s time to talk about the cold. This week our Gear Experts® are going to discuss cold stress and how you can combat it while on the job site.

    Cold Stress

    Cold stress isn’t something that people typically talk about. While heat stress is mentioned often and everyone at least knows a little bit about it cold stress doesn’t get nearly as much coverage. But its effects can be just as damaging to your body. So, what is cold stress? Cold stress occurs when your body can no longer maintain its normal temperature. When your skin temperature drops low enough it can begin to lower your internal body temperature.

    To maintain your vital organs, the body reroutes blood away from your external extremities in an effort to keep your core temperature up. This blood flow change can cause serious complications or even death. When gauging whether or not cold stress is a threat keep these 3 things in mind:

    Dampness & Windchill

    → Pre-existing health conditions and poor physical conditioning

    → Improper attire

    Cold Stress Injuries & Illness

    Cold stress, like heat stress, can cause serious illness. Common injuries and illnesses of cold stress include:

    → Hypothermia: A dangerously low body temperature that can result in gangrene or death.

    → Frostbite: The freezing of body tissue (usually skin) that results when the body redirects blood flow away from the outer extremities.

    → Trench Foot: A foot condition caused by overexposure to cold water or mud. Causes the surface tissue of the foot to die and turn black.

    Staying Warm

    While the threat of cold stress is serious, the solution to prevent it is simple: dress properly. Dressing for cold weather is the most important and effective precaution you can take to reduce the chances of cold stress. Here are some of our favorite options when it comes to protecting yourself from the cold:

    Ergodyne 6466 N-Ferno Thermal Jacket

    The Ergodyne 6466 N-Ferno Thermal Jacket is your first line of defense against winter weather. Let’s break down what makes this jacket so effective. On the outside, it features a 500D Nylon body with 1600D Nylon reinforced zones in the upper arm and shoulder section to protect from wear and tear. It also features a waterproof coating to prevent liquid from making contact with your skin (remember that dampness can lead to cold stress). The inside is made of 3M Thinsulate insulation which provides top-notch warmth with a quilted layer for comfort.

    This jacket isn’t short of storage either. Whether you are carrying hand warmers or something like a two way radio this jacket can handle it. It features two exterior pockets on the front and back and it has an interior device pocket. The YK zippers and spandex cuffs on the arms help seal out the cold and keep you nice and warm.

    Milwaukee M12 Heated Jacket

    The Milwaukee M12 Heated Jacket comes in a variety of colors and styles. It is also available in a “kit” version that includes a battery and charger. This jacket combines toughness and technology to redefine layering on the job site. The key feature of this jacket is the carbon fiber heating element that creates and distributes heat across the chest and back. The jacket is powered by an M12 Red Lithium Battery that provides 8 hours of runtime. It also features a one-touch LED controller that allows you to choose from 3 heat settings per zone. The three zones are chest, back, and front hand pocket (the chest and back zone can be adjusted independently from the front hand pocket zone).

    Now, let’s talk about toughness. This jacket is made out of 900D ripstop polyester with nine riveted reinforced pockets (including battery pocket). It features integrated knit cuffs, an exterior storm flap, and a drop tail extended back for maximum comfort and coverage. And, most importantly, it’s washer and dryer safe so you can get it dirty and throw it in the laundry without having to worry about a thing.

    Cold stress is no joke, but it’s pretty simple to prevent. If you need help finding the perfect winter solution for you and/or your crew or you just have questions about cold stress – click here to contact one of our Gear Experts®.

  9. Rope Bag Buying Guide

    Rope, it’s something that every at-height worker needs on a job site, but it’s not always the easiest part of your gear to transport. Imagine getting to your location – ready to get the day started – and having to spend an hour untangling your rope, just to find out that it accidentally got cut in your trailer while being transported. Not only did you waste an hour of your morning, but now you have to take that rope out of service because it is no longer safe to use. This week our Gear Experts® are going to cover rope bags and things to look at when you’re on the hunt for one.

    Rope Bags

    Rope bags are pretty self-explanatory. They are bags designed to hold and transport rope (we were shocked when we first found out too…). While all rope bags have the same purpose, to store and transport rope, there are a few things to consider when looking at rope bags.

    What to Look for in a Rope Bag

    When you first look at the selection of diverse rope bags that are available it can be overwhelming. But, if you break down all of the different features, and what will suit your rope and your unique application it can be pretty simple. Some things to consider are color, size, document pockets, additional storage compartments, applications, and straps.

    Color

    Color is more of an organizational benefit than anything. Having ropes of different types (Kernmantle, Double Braid, or 3-Strand) or ropes for specific applications in different colored bags can help keep you organized and streamline the process of grabbing the specific rope you need when you need it.

    Size

    Ropes come in a range of sizes – and that means that rope bags do, too. Going through dozens of rope bags individually to try and find the size you need can take a lot of time. That’s why we made this handy chart.

    Document Pockets

    Document pockets make staying safe and compliant easy, they also allow for quick labeling. Many rope bags feature document pockets where you can store your rope inspection forms, labels to help keep your gear organized and any other pertinent information about your rope. We cover rope inspection in this blog post.

    Additional Storage

    Some rope bags simply store rope, but sometimes you need more out of your bag. If you want the ability to store additional gear, like carabiners, you’ll want additional pockets in your bag.

    Applications

    Most rope bags will work for all of your applications, but there are some situations where specialty or unique bags may serve a better purpose. For example, if you are going to be around a lot of water – having a waterproof bag can prevent your rope from getting damaged. If you don’t typically work around water, then a bag that has small holes in the bottom (gusseted) to allow the rope to breathe will be sufficient. One important aspect of rope care is washing your rope – if you want to use a washing machine you’ll need to put your rope in a laundry bag.

    Straps

    The last thing on our list of considerations when picking a rope bag is what type of straps it has. The rope bag is great for storing and protecting a rope, but it still has to be carried around the job site. Having comfortable straps is always something to keep in mind, as well as if it has one strap or a setup more like backpack straps.

    If you need more information about choosing the right rope bag or would like help picking the bag best for you, click here to contact one of our Gear Experts®.

  10. Must-Haves: Tower Climber Edition

    As a tower climber there is a ton of different gear to choose from and sometimes weeding through everything can take way too much time. This week our Gear Experts® are going to break down the must-have gear you need to get the job done and stay safe.

    The Gear

    So, what are the essentials needed for tower climbers?

    Harness

    Let’s start with the most obvious: a harness. Your harness is the focal point of all your gear, but which harness is the best? Well, that depends on some factors about what job you will be doing. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. You can click here to check out our Ultimate Fall Protection Harness Buying Guide for details on how to pick the right harness for you.

    Helmet

    The next intricate piece is a helmet. Protecting your dome is important and picking the right helmet ensures that your noggin will go uncracked. Picking the right helmet involves a little bit of knowledge about the job at hand. Check out our Safety Helmets 101 blog post where we take you through the what’s what when it comes to keeping your noodle safe. You can also download our free Safety Helmets 101 pdf from our Knowledge Base.

    Twin Leg Lanyard

    Once you’ve got your harness and helmet covered, it’s time to look at a shock absorbing lanyard. Twin leg lanyards are diverse. They come in a range of styles and lengths for a range of specific applications (like foot level tie off or tie-back) and with a ton of different connection point options.

    Cable Safety Sleeve (Cable Grab)

    Chances are, a tower you encounter will have a cable climb system which means you will need a way to securely connect your harness to that system. In fact, nearly every telecom tower in North America has a cable climb system of some sort. So, your gear list isn’t complete without a cable grab. While the basic function of cable grabs are pretty much the same – there are subtle differences in each.

    Pass-Through Sling (Pass-Through Web Anchor)

    Sometimes you will run into a situation where you need to make your own anchorage point. Having a pass-through anchor in your gear list will give you the ability to produce that anchorage point.

    Positioning Lanyard

    You’ve made it to your destination on the tower, but now you can’t quite work where you need to because the cable climb system isn’t in the right spot and you need both of your hands to work. That’s where a positioning lanyard comes in. Using your twin leg lanyard to move safely to your working location you can then position yourself and work handsfree with your positioning lanyard.

    Bolt Bag

    You’ve only got two hands (us too, unfortunately) which means that carrying nuts, bolts, and small tools up the tower while your climbing isn’t possible. That’s why a bolt bag is on our must-haves list.

    Carabiner

    At least one carabiner will make your life and the job so much easier. We recommend at least two typically, but one will get you by. Carabiners have a ton of different applications but using one to connect your bolt bag to your harness isn’t a bad idea. Find out more about carabiner gates with our free downloadable pdf from our knowledge base.

    Separator Bar (Spreader Bar)

    Sitting or leaning while positioned on the tower can place a lot of pressure on your waist and hips. It’s hard on your body and uncomfortable. Especially if you’re in that position for an extended amount of time. Using a separator spreader bar helps relieve that pressure and keep you feeling great.

    RF Monitor

    Not all dangers can be seen with the human eye and RF frequencies are one of them. Ensuring that you are not overexposed to RF waves is extremely important to your safety and the FieldSENSE 2.0 Personal RF Monitor has you covered. For more information on the FieldSENSE RF Monitor check out our blog post.

    Duffle Bag

    You’re loaded up with all the must-have gear for climbing the tower, but now you’ve got one little problem – you can’t carry it all. Did we mention having 2 hands isn’t enough already? A duffle bag fixes that problem. Fit all your gear neatly organized in one single, easy to transport duffle bag.

    All-In-One Solution

    We’ve covered a lot of information in this blog post – and sifting through all of the different options for each of the must-have pieces of gear takes time. Because we know that your time is precious our Gear Experts® have put together an Essential Tower Climbing Kit that includes all of the equipment we discussed in this blog post (except for the RF Monitor). It also includes a variety of upgradable options (like the RF Monitor).

    We have a variety of different kits assembled by our Gear Experts® for a range of different applications.
