5G

  1. Product Spotlight: Narda RadMan 2XT RF Monitor

Introducing the all-new Radman 2XT RF Monitor 5G Monitor from GME Supply

5G is finally here. Telecom crews around the world are gearing up to start installing 5G equipment. And, with new equipment, there are new hazards to be aware of. As North America’s Premier Outfitter of fall protection, safety equipment, and gear for at-height workers, it’s part of our mission to make sure we have the gear you need to stay safe on the job.

    A True 5G RF Monitor

The wait for a true 5G RF monitor is finally over. The RadMan 2XT RF Monitor from Narda is an affordable RF detection solution. Broadcasting, telecommunications, and radar antennas are all sources of electromagnetic hazards. That means technicians must be trained on those hazards. They must also be provided with equipment to monitor and avoid overexposure. For more information on RF fundamentals, our Gear Experts broke down RF in a previous blog post.

The Narda RadMan 2XT RF Monitor

The RadMan 2XT features isotropic sensors for both the E and H Fields. That means it measures both electrical and magnetic radiation omnidirectionally. This powerful device features one of the widest detectable frequency ranges available. The E Field frequency ranges from 900kHz to 60 GHz while the H Field is capable of 27MHz to 1GH.

No other monitor covers all current and planned 5G frequencies with isotropic sensors for both E and H Fields at this price point. In fact, this combination of features makes the RadMan the best option for body-worn RF detection on the market.

    Jam-Packed with Features

We mentioned body-worn above. This device can securely attach to a worker’s harness. It also provides a highly detectable warning signal when permissible exposure levels are reached. The Field exposure level is indicated by the six LED lights on the device. When alerting of dangerous levels, the device emits flashing lights, noticeable vibrations, and a loud tone that you can’t miss.

Percentages of levels are displayed on the screen on the front of the device. They are part of a “shaped response”. This means the technician can tell, at a glance, the level of RF that they’re being exposed to in relation to the FCC’s approved permissible exposure levels. The shaped response makes it easier for workers to take the protective measures they’ve been trained to use. Simply put, the device does the math for the technician.

    Housing

When you’re climbing up a tower or working on a roof, size and weight matter. The build of the RadMan 2XT RF Monitor is compact and light. It weighs an incredible 0.4 pounds and is only 6.5 inches long. The small size doesn’t sacrifice capabilities, though. The battery can pump out 800 hours of monitoring (depending on the alarm settings). And, the quick charge feature gives you 8 hours of detection time from a 5-minute charge.

The included RF absorber reduces the signal reflection caused by the body of the device giving you more accurate and dependable protection. Plus, it can be released from the attachment with one hand allowing you to determine the Field exposure away from your body. An elastic tether is also included with the device to prevent it from being dropped.

    Self-Testing & Memory

Thanks to the newly developed automatic senor test, the sensors receive a correct function test every time the device is turned on – providing additional assurance. And, the RadMan 2XT RF Monitor saves the exposure values for the E and H Fields continuously. It even goes a step further and adds a timestamp to each data set. The device can save up to 100,000 events and with the RadMan2-TS software, data can easily be transferred to a computer via USB for reporting.

  3. Line of Sight Reporting - 3Z RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool

    3Z Telecom Easy Bullseye Alignment

As 5G rolls out, accurate antenna alignment is increasingly important. Our Gear Experts® have previously covered accurately aligning 5G small cell antennas to maximize antenna performance. This week our Gear Experts explain Line of Sight Reporting with the RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool from 3Z.

    Line of Sight

Carriers are using 5G New Radio modeling software to develop their network and rollout plans. But, this software isn’t perfect when it comes to identifying nearfield RF obstacles that could render the antenna useless. That’s where the RF Vision Antenna Aligner from 3Z comes into play. It features a built-in, line-of-sight target HD camera that can help installers both identify and record potential antenna obstructions when performing on-site surveys. Once you’ve achieved a comprehensive antenna alignment with a line-of-sight survey a report is automatically generated of the site for sharing with the carrier.

    Automated Report Generator

The automated report generator embeds line-of-sight images with other alignment data such as site ID, azimuth, tilt, roll, height, etc., to create quick, concise, and reliable reports.

Technicians save valuable time performing an alignment and creating a report and can download and share reports from a mobile device in real-time. The RF Vision will create a single comprehensive PDF or CSV report for each site being aligned.

    Alignment and Report Generation Steps

First, make sure you have the RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool charged and the appropriate mounting bracket for the type of antenna you’re aligning. The RF Vision works with Panel, Microwave, Cylindrical Sheath, and Small Cell 5G antennas.

Follow the mounting instructions outlined in the quick start guide that comes with the device. Turn the device on and select what kind of antenna you’ll be aligning. From there you will be taken into the viewfinder.

Now touch the box in the lower-left corner next to the camera icon. Here you’ll enter site information such as your Site ID, Sector Number, and Antenna information. Then you’ll enter your target azimuth and click accept.

This should take you back to the viewfinder where it shows your current azimuth, tilt, roll, as well as your target numbers. Once you have located the target on the screen you’ll adjust the position of the antenna until the bullseye lines up with that target. The target will turn green when it’s correctly aligned.

Then simply click the disk icon on the device and it will save it as a PDF report. With those line-of-sight reports, engineers are able to identify near-field obstructions and optimize antenna orientations, all while the technicians are still on-site, saving them the hassle of revisiting a site to adjust the alignment.

  5. 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner: Small Cell Mounting

    3Z Small Cell Mounting

With the 5G rollout in full swing accurate antenna alignment is going to be more important than ever. This week, our Gear Experts® are going to cover the importance of accurately aligning 5G small cell antennas to maximize high-band mmW frequencies and Massive MIMO beamforming antenna performance.

    5G Challenges

5G is a massive leap in cellular technology that will bring near gigabit mobile speeds. It will open up new opportunities for a range of industries from consumer to public health and beyond. But, as with any leap in technology, there are roadblocks that have to be overcome. 5G brings some new challenges that aren’t as prevalent with typical LTE antennas on a tower or monopole.

    Coverage vs Speed

In dense city landscapes, the deployment of 5G will be carried on the backs of small cell antennas that are mounted on buildings, light posts, or any structure that can be used to support an antenna and position it in the direction it needs to be. The reason for this is because of coverage distance.

Small cell antennas have an extremely powerful signal strength – and they need to in order to transmit 5G. But, as a trade-off for power, the distance they can cover is severely diminished. That means these antennas will need to be positioned closer to the ground.

It features a line-of-sight target camera that can help installers both identify and record potential antenna obstructions when performing on-site surveys. Once you’ve achieved a comprehensive antenna alignment with a line-of-sight survey a report is automatically generated of the site for sharing with the carrier.

    Small Cell

The RF Vision is a versatile aligner and fits most antenna types. It features GNSS dual frequency technology to deliver accurate alignment readings – even in high-density urban areas. But, with that being said, aligning small cell antennas still isn’t a walk in the park. Small cell antennas are typically housed in a cylindrical canister which conceals up to 3 directional antennas.

Alignment can be easier with the use of the small cell reference plate for the strap clamp that comes with the RF Vision. In fact, the small cell reference plate is so simple to use that you simply attach it and line up the tool with the correct antenna. Let’s go ahead and break that down, too.

Small Cell Reference Installation and Use

The first step when using the small cell reference plate is to install the rubber bumpers to protect the small cell housing. Next, you want to mount the reference plate on the bottom of the strap clamp pointing in the same direction as the rubber bumpers. Please note that you will need to flip the mounting plate for the alignment tool so that it is pointing in the opposite direction of the bumpers and reference plate.

Once the tool, mounting clamp, and reference plate are securely attached, locate the reference arrow on the bottom of the small cell antenna. That arrow tells you which direction each antenna is facing within the canister. Line the reference plate up with the desired antenna and strap the mounting bracket down tightly so it can’t be moved. Now, you're properly lined up with the antenna and you can proceed with aligning the antenna.
