  1. 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner: Small Cell Mounting

    3Z Small Cell Mounting

With the 5G rollout in full swing accurate antenna alignment is going to be more important than ever. This week, our Gear Experts® are going to cover the importance of accurately aligning 5G small cell antennas to maximize high-band mmW frequencies and Massive MIMO beamforming antenna performance.

    5G Challenges

5G is a massive leap in cellular technology that will bring near gigabit mobile speeds. It will open up new opportunities for a range of industries from consumer to public health and beyond. But, as with any leap in technology, there are roadblocks that have to be overcome. 5G brings some new challenges that aren’t as prevalent with typical LTE antennas on a tower or monopole.

    Coverage vs Speed

In dense city landscapes, the deployment of 5G will be carried on the backs of small cell antennas that are mounted on buildings, light posts, or any structure that can be used to support an antenna and position it in the direction it needs to be. The reason for this is because of coverage distance.

Small cell antennas have an extremely powerful signal strength – and they need to in order to transmit 5G. But, as a trade-off for power, the distance they can cover is severely diminished. That means these antennas will need to be positioned closer to the ground.

    Line of Sight

Carriers are using 5G New Radio modeling software to develop their network and rollout plans. But, this software isn’t perfect when it comes to identifying nearfield RF obstacles that could render the antenna useless. That’s where the RF Vision Antenna Aligner from 3Z comes into play. It features a line-of-sight target camera that can help installers both identify and record potential antenna obstructions when performing on-site surveys. Once you’ve achieved a comprehensive antenna alignment with a line-of-sight survey a report is automatically generated of the site for sharing with the carrier.

    Small Cell

The RF Vision is a versatile aligner and fits most antenna types. It features GNSS dual frequency technology to deliver accurate alignment readings – even in high-density urban areas. But, with that being said, aligning small cell antennas still isn’t a walk in the park. Small cell antennas are typically housed in a cylindrical canister which conceals up to 3 directional antennas.

Alignment can be easier with the use of the small cell reference plate for the strap clamp that comes with the RF Vision. In fact, the small cell reference plate is so simple to use that you simply attach it and line up the tool with the correct antenna. Let’s go ahead and break that down, too.

Small Cell Reference Installation and Use

The first step when using the small cell reference plate is to install the rubber bumpers to protect the small cell housing. Next, you want to mount the reference plate on the bottom of the strap clamp pointing in the same direction as the rubber bumpers. Please note that you will need to flip the mounting plate for the alignment tool so that it is pointing in the opposite direction of the bumpers and reference plate.

Once the tool, mounting clamp, and reference plate are securely attached, locate the reference arrow on the bottom of the small cell antenna. That arrow tells you which direction each antenna is facing within the canister. Line the reference plate up with the desired antenna and strap the mounting bracket down tightly so it can’t be moved. Now, you're properly lined up with the antenna and you can proceed with aligning the antenna.

  2. 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner Application Guide

The 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner is a revolutionary antenna alignment device that helps you easily and effectively install and maintain antennas. We’ve outlined many different features about this antenna aligner in previous blog posts. You can find a list of those blog posts here. This week our Gear Experts® are going to break down the free smartphone app available for download that works in conjunction with the RF Vision Antenna Aligner.

    There’s an App for That

In 2019 there is literally an app for everything and the telecom profession is no different. The RF Vision Mobile App is available on both Android and iOS devices and allows you to control and monitor your RF Vision Alignment Tool with the mobile device that you already have in your pocket. So, let’s break down the app and some of the cool features it has.

    RF Vision Mobile App

    Design

The app features a modern, streamlined design that is easy to navigate and helps you focus on performing the job. When you first open the app, you’ll notice that it looks pretty similar to the navigation menu on the actual device. That’s because you can do virtually anything you would do on the device touchscreen through your phone.

    Connecting the App

When it comes to connecting the app to the device, 3Z has made it simple. The first step is to make sure that the software on your Antenna Aligner is up to date. Next, enable Bluetooth on both the aligner and your mobile device. Once Bluetooth has been enabled, open the RF Vision Mobile app and select your Antenna Alignment Tool in the menu. Once this process has been completed you should be taken back to the main screen where you can begin controlling your tool.

    Using the App

Once the connection process has been completed you can navigate the menus just as would on the device itself. You can select the type of antenna you’re working with and entering all of the site information that is required is as easy as typing a text message. You can also see, in real-time, the line of sight target acquisition system as you align the antenna.

But, the advantages of the mobile app don’t stop there. Easily report to the client that the job has been completed with the user-friendly ability to view, edit, delete, and download PDF reports (with the included line of sight images) straight to your mobile device. This feature makes sending your reports to your client as easy as sending an email from your phone.

This app makes an already easy to use device even more convenient. If you have any questions about the 3Z RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool or the RF Mobile App, click here to contact one of our Gear Experts®.

  3. 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner Warranty & Damage Protection Plan

Antenna alignment is an important part of installing and maintaining antennas. Without proper alignment, you can run into a whole slew of issues like coverage gaps, network performance gradation, and loss of revenue. That’s where an antenna aligner like the 3Z RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool comes in. In the first three parts of our four-part blog series on the 3Z Vision Antenna Alignment Tool, we covered the device itself, the tools and accessories that can make the antenna aligner extremely versatile, and how to properly care for and inspect your antenna aligner. This week our Gear Experts® are going to cover the warranty and replacement plan available for the 3Z Vision Antenna Aligner.

    Warranty

The warranty for the 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner is similar to many standard warranties for electronic devices. We will outline some of the points below but recommend that you read this document which covers the Manufacturer’s Warranty in its entirety as well.

    What Is Covered

The warranty is a limited warranty that covers factory defects in materials and workmanship in the product(s). It is effective for one (1) year from the date of original purchase and includes hardware as well as firmware and software updates.

    What Isn't Covered

The warranty, like most warranties, doesn’t cover damage, deterioration, or malfunction resulting from any alteration, modification, improper or unreasonable use or maintenance, misuse, abuse, accident, neglect, exposure to excess moisture, fire, improper packing and shipping (such claims must be presented to the carrier), lightning, power surges, or other acts of nature. Basically, take care of the device and don’t try to fix it yourself if something starts malfunctioning. If you start having issues, contact one of our Gear Experts® and we will help you get the process started.

    Who Is Covered

It is important for us to mention that only the original purchaser of the RF Vision Antenna Aligner is covered under the warranty. This means that the warranty is non-transferrable, and you will need proof of purchase in order to make a claim.

For more information about the warranty claim click here.

As you see from the warranty information, not everything is covered. Not to mention that the warranty only covers the first year of you owning the device. That’s where something like the Damage Protection Plan comes into play.

    Damage Protection Plan

The damage protection plan is an optional plan that can be purchased in conjunction with the 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner. This plan is unique because it can be renewed every two years – ensuring that you never have to go a minute without being covered.

Included in the Damage Protection Plan

    The damage protection plan covers:

  4. 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner Care & Inspection

Over the past few months, we have talked a lot about the 3Z RF Vision Antenna Aligner. We outlined what the aligner is and how it works here and a broke down each accessory and how it works here. This week, our Gear Experts® are going to break down how to care for the antenna aligner and what steps you need to take to make sure that your aligner stays accurate.

    Tough as Nails

As we mentioned in our 3Z RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool Buying Guide this tool is built to last. It features an all-weather enclosure designed to withstand everything mother nature has to throw at it. The strengthened polycarbonate hard plastic and protective bumper make it pretty much impact resistant. Not to mention the body is heat resistant too. As a tower climber, you know that weather can be unforgiving – this rugged tool can handle it.

    Impact Resistant Display

When you see touch screens, the first thing you think of is probably how easy it will break. 3Z knew that to ensure this tool could stand up to the tough job, the touch screen had to be tough. The display features chemically strengthened glass intended for rugged use. The chemical treatment makes the screen resistant to scratching, cracking, and breaking.

    Calibration

While this device has a rugged design and is built to handle the toughest of situations, it is always a good idea to make sure that it is performing up to standards. Over the course of using the tool, the sensitivity can be affected which means that reading can slowly become less accurate. Every two years the RF Vision should be sent in for calibration. There are two different calibration options available: Standard and Premium.

    Standard Calibration

Standard calibration includes a full internal calibration, firmware/software updates, tune-ups, cleaning, and a systems test.

    Premium Calibration

The premium calibration includes everything listed in the standard calibration plus a full body replacement with sealants.

The camera is an awesome feature of this alignment tool, but to use the embedded augmented reality feature (which allows you to see all of the data provided on the screen laid over the real world) you have to purchase the camera license. The camera license is cheaper if purchased at the same time as the device itself. You also have the option to do a 30 day trial of the camera license. However, if you do the 30 day trial you do not get the discounted license rate.

The 3Z RF Vision Antenna Alignment Tool comes with a standard 1 year manufacturer warranty. This warranty covers manufacturer defects, but doesn’t include anything else. The damage protection plan, on the other hand, covers everything the standard warranty does not. For more information on the Damage Protection Plan click here.

GME Supply offers financing options for this aligner. For more information on our financing process please click here or contact one of our Gear Experts®.
